Third time's the charm?

sücco's burgeoning blog!

Back to Bloggin’ (WHERE HAVE I BEEN!)

Hi everyone! I’ve been very quiet for a while, and this year I will not be quiet, I will be loud and annoying. On succojones.net!

So as far as games go, last time I was postin’ all the time I was making Stimbu Delta in PICO-8. I ran into trouble trying to figure out the spawning of enemies, as I’d have to program it all by hand. The OG Stimbu just has 4 spawners that spawn the same enemy on a timer with some position offsetting. I didn’t know how to make it all work with multiple enemy types and all that.

I decided to take my ideas to Game Maker, which I have used before to varying success. Game Maker is a cool engine that can do a lot of the work for you, but can also end up fighting you for control.

For example, I need sprites that can face 8 different directions while animating, and that feature is not built into Game Maker. I’ve built it myself, but I have to hijack or tiptoe around Game Maker’s existing systems.

Anyways, here’s footage of Stimbu Jr, which was my first foray back into Game Maker. I dropped the crafting and went for a Gradius-style thing.

I gave up on this for whatever reason, and decided to go for something more Shock Troopers-y, with scrolling levels and stuff. I got some good work done, with multi-directional sprites and a custom hitbox system and carry-able items. Stimbu II:

I think the game was just a bit too complex for me to handle designing. I’m not too familiar with this type of game, despite my repeated attempts to make them. I ended up getting overwhelmed and gave up.

I finished my first two years at community college in May, and spent the summer working my keister off at my stupid job. I spent most of my free time toiling with Mario World hacking, though I didn’t end up finishing anything. I made like, half of a level:

Six months later…

Now my first semester at my new college is done! I made it through with a delightful grade of 4, and did some neat things in my free time.

For a few weeks I was working hard on a sequel to Jeri Tower, and got everything from the first game ported over to Game Maker, and then some.

That’s an awful video, so play it yourself here!!! https://www.newgrounds.com/projects/games/6039616/preview

I did a lot of the smart thinking and tedious implementing stuff, but I gotta do some on-paper planning to get this project finished. I’m a little sick of Game Maker but the code is in fine enough shape that I’ll be able to get through!

At the current moment I’m floating between all sorts of ideas I wanna pursue when it comes to making games. I’ve been learning Love2D and will probably be using it for future projects. I will keep you all updated once I get rolling with something!

Outside of my own auteurism, I helped with two cool games by crow seeds!

Party Pooper! and SCAMS_FOR_THRILLS!

Party Pooper was a big team effort with delightful friends like Popper and Abby! We all worked together with crow seeds to design the game and its funny characters and world. It was stressful because I had a lot of backgrounds to draw before the jam deadline, but we all did it together!!!

We ended up getting front-paged when we put it on Newgrounds, and then put into the Legendary Games section, which is like being super-front-paged!

SCAMS was made with a much smaller team for another game jam, and I only ended up helping with some art for the later updated version. I got to whip out my Huion screen tablet and paint some handsome faces.

“HORSE”

NON-GAMES TIME!!

I’ve been up to no good under other accounts this year, and it’s time to spill it all! Me and my friends started a channel called Milk & Punishment to upload random crap. I even read a scary creepypasta on Halloween! These are our proudest creations so far:

I’m a big nerd for a couple Japanese bands. My favorites are the pillows and noodles, and I’ve been translating some tunes and uploading them to da tube!

I’ve been slowly learning Japanese for a long time, and taking a class this semester was a big help. Using wonderful sites like jisho.org and ichi.moe, I’ve been able to become a translation machine of sorts. And let me tell you, it’s not easy. It takes a lot of patience and care to translate Japanese to English, even if you’re fully fluent.

In the future, I’ll be adding pages on here to contain my translations.

What will he post

So what will he post?? I’ll keep you, my lovely reader, updated on all of my creative exploits. Drawings and games and translations and zoo trips.

I played a lot of games this year and I’ll probably do a post going through them all. On top of that I’ll keep up the “Cool Stuff I Like” category with focused reviews and blurbs about games. Maybe Seinfeld will return?

I’ve recently been sucked back into my yearly Pokemon phase. I’ve been working on the Gen 1 games on and off for about a year, and I’m taking a break to start playing Gen 3!

If you don’t know what the hell I’m talking about, that’s understandable. But to fill out the blog and give myself something to look back on (because 100%ing these game is gonna be a lot of work over a long time) I’m gonna do little update posts about my Pokemon going-ons!

That’s about all the post I can muster this fine day (it’s not a fine day it’s cold as %@#! and snowing and windy and I have to shovel). If you’ve never seen my bloggins before, check out some of my old posts! I ported everything from my old blogspot and cohost, and there’s some amusing stuff.

This one about rom hacking is one of my proudest (I got 4th place in the contest btw)

Thanks for reading, I’ll…

🐒See you next post!🐒
