It came out earlier this week that a Youtuber was being a sex pest. I guess that’s not jaw dropping news these days.

I watched this person when I was a kid, they were one of the first people I really latched on to. Let’s plays had their niche back then, and were more about being entertaining-informational guides through a game. I was single digits in age when I found this stuff, mind you. I never copied the bad words I heard, but I was pretty obsessed with the memes of the day.

Anyways, they’ve actually kept making those kinds of videos to this day, and while they’re not my thing anymore, I still kept an eye on them and it felt nice knowing a pillar of old Youtube was still finding success. But I guess when you give someone a platform for that long you’re bound to see something fucked up.

I have this weird memory, sitting on the school bus going home. Second grade maybe? I somehow started a conversation with the girl behind me, talking through the crack between the seat and the window. I think she was a bit older than me? She also liked Youtube, and we both shared our fondness for this creator in particular. Our conversation was very brief, and then one of us had to get off the bus. And then I never saw her again!

What a chance encounter in retrospect. The internet wasn’t so easy to access for a kid back in 2010! I watched smart devices come up from nothing, and in the meantime, I was doing all my web surfing on the family Windows Vista desktop. And by the time other kids had caught on to this stuff, they weren’t interested in the same stuff I was.

So random girl, I hope you’re doing great. I wonder if you still watch Mario Sunshine let’s plays…
